The Merge: Crytpo climate pollution slasher

The Merge. Sounds like a low-budget passion film project about navigating motorway on-ramps (bit niche, but hey, prolly would get an audience) This Merge, however is potentially much more roadworthy. (Sweet Jesus, make it stop - ed). It's all about the Ethereum tech update that's happening right now - and it affects you.

Why's this a big deal? Well, the update should shrink the cytpotcurrecy's energy use quite dramatically, so the stakes are high. The current way the Ethereum blockchain validates transactions uses huge amounts of elecricity, and this update will supposely cut the energy consumption by a whopping 99.95%

Considering the network is already estimated to be using as much energy as Bangladesh, this is big. TLDR;

• The Merge changes the way the network is validated

• Moves from 'proof of work' to 'proof of stake' so less energy is consumed by those mining it

• More energy efficiency = likely more people using the blockchain = more businesses and organisations getting on board with decentralistion, web3, metaverse

• Potentially more trust from the media/public - into banking, services, donations - as more favourable reporting (perception matters)

Nice headline. is there some truth in it? well, in an article in the Atlantic, Jule Halpert outlines the case for a particular stage of the parent-child relationship - ie. when your kids are all growed up - as being fraught with challenges that aren't talked about enough

What organisation do you work for? I established the patient charity, Ataxia and me www.ataxia-and-me.org

What’s your current biggest issue? As Ataxia could be the most serious health condition you have never heard of. The biggest challenge is getting awareness to the general population (and the medical community)

How are you solving it? Using Social media for Ataxia awareness @ataxia_and_me as well as our website www.ataxia-and-me.org to share patient stories and gather and share Ataxia information

Tell us something no-one else knows about you or your organisation? Our logo is a Brain made up of Hexagons, with the "faulty" part (for Ataxia) being highlighted
