It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes (actually don't, HR won't have it)

Some like it hot, but this is getting ridiculous. With a bona fide heatwave currently covering a fair slice of the UK, how hot is too hot at work? are you allowed to stay at home if it's too clement? let's have a looksee

There isn't anything written in law that says its too hot, or too cold for a given workplace. The HSE (health and safety executive) suggest workplaces should ideally be 16C - or 13C if the job is mainly physical in nature. It also offers up that air should be fresh and clean and temperatures 'reasonable'. So basically, you're right outta luck, bub.

Employers should consider their “duty of care” and what is “reasonable” when calling employees into the office, taking heed of guidance and regulations issued by the Health & Safety Executive.

To be clear, such guidance and regulations are not what we call ‘black letter law’, by which I mean legal rules well known and beyond doubt, but rather a sensible means of navigation to avoid future legal problems.

So really, it's all down to your employer. As you have no legal options, the best bet is to see if you can ensure flexible working is in place (working hours as well as days) and if you do have to go in obvious stuff like turning off printers, photocopiers, computers that aren't needed. Try and keep cool, It'll be winter soon.

Ok, so it's hot, you've managed to get that sweet, sweet WFH signed off. All set. Well, sort of. An increasing remote workers issue is one of 'invisibility' (i.e. you're not in the office, so out-of-sight out-of-mind when it comes to watercooler talk, social interactions with colleagues, promotion chat with the boss etc. What to do?

The team over at Charity Digital have some tips

  • Formal and informal comms is key. Yes you have to turn up for your zoom/teams/google meet daily standup but you should also consider the more relaxed chats you have with colleagues - whilst we're all a bit sick of video calls in our pants (just me then, also TMI?) they matter

  • Why not have a virual lunch date 1-to-1 with a work pal, it's good to talk as they say

  • And yes you should use slack or whatever internal wiki you use to contribute ideas, comments, thoughts. The game is being seen - doesn't have to be on video.

  • Keep the same hours as your team if possible. We all love a lie-in, but sticking generally to the hours is good for visibility - and wellbeing n'all

Degen Usually shorthand for “degenerate gambler.” This refers to people who take risky bets with cryptocurrencies, buying NFTs and such.

While it sounds like a negative term it's often used self-referentially - and in positive terms - to describe oneself. "I'm such a degen Alice, I aped into an alpha mint of moon domes, wagmi" (if you have no idea what that sentence means, have a look at our other daily dictionaries to get you up to speed.

In short you need to DYOR (Do Your Own Research) and due diligence before spending you or your organisations funds, time or reputation on risky bets.

As with Crypto, as with life. Know the lingo, know the codes :)
