Threads: How to engage with young people today

I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way (have you got George Bensons' permission for that? - ed)  er, OK so George may have got there first with the sentiment, but your purpose-driven org needs those pesky kids as content creators, future volunteers, staff, funders - or even your CEO. So listen up.

So how can you engage them without coming across all 'down with the kids' (or Plagiarising an RnB stalwarts' back catalogue) Charity Digital have some tips to help

The TLDR is;

  • Consider what younger generations actually want

  • Think about young trustees

  • Go digital, and for the love of Pete, go mobile

  • Think about the medium you'll use

  • Use social the right way

  • Position yourself as a leader of change

Social Media: Tips for non-profits on using Instagram

Big bad Meta. You might not like them, but you gotta use them if you want grow your audience online. Case in point, Instagram - although awash with six-packs, foodie snaps and people living their best lives - it's also a big tool in any purpose-driven organisations arsenal.

Stats don't lie

  • 2.91 billion active users, with 1.22 billion monthly users

  • 500 million accounts use Instagram Stories daily

  • 1 in 2 people use Instagram to engage with new brands

  • 44% of people use Instagram to shop weekly

Instagram algo's change frequently, here are some tips to keep you in the right side of Zuck.

  • Use a business account - it helps with visibility

  • Create stories and save story highlights - ensures you don't spam followers timelines

  • More video means more views - storytelling works, and you can recut for other social channels

  • See what your followers are liking - format, tone, content types and the replicate

  • Use desktop - yes it's counterintuitive (Insta is an app after all) but the dekstop version gives you more power to see stats, comment, get an overview

  • Don't post pictures of your breakfast. Unless it's chocolate cake, and I can have some.
