To quit, or not to quit

'That's it I've had enough, I quit'  is a common refrain in Purposeville. What with launching a media company in a recession, juggling digital agency work and putting the bins out. It's enough to make you say STOP. (if you say hammer-time next, you're fired -ed)

Two camps co-exist - the world of hustling, grinding it out, sticking 'till the grim end is the default setting for a lot of digital folk. Constrast this against the so-called snowflake generations' drop-it-at-the-first-sign-of-hardship mentality, and we're left with quite the question. Luckily The Atlantic have laid out some thoughts for us on that very subject. Handy eh.

Knowing when to quit, they posit, is a bit of superpower. With some people going to extreme lengths to 'just keep going and never quit' it's worth a look

TLDR

  • Check the Marathon runner who ran 18 miles on a broken leg (another who did 10 miles with a broken foot)

  • Ponder whether 'grit' is a good thing in a bad job, relationship or career

  • The great resignation is for losers

  • Quiet quitting is becoming more of a thing

  • 20,000 people flipped a virtual coin to decide whether to quit a job (er, tell me more)

  • The sunk-cost fallacy is real

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do? I'm a multi-hyphenate, but not in a celeb way (yet). Anyway, I wear many hats - program manager, digital marketing strategist, copywriter, newsletter writer, Canva PRO designer. My job is a hybrid function  that combines program management and the non-profit communications function.

What organisation do you work for? Growth Through Learning is a secular organization that supports education and development by providing full scholarships to secondary schools for bright young women in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda who would otherwise be unable to afford an education.

What’s your current biggest issue? We turn away many scholarship applicants each year because our current financial capacity limits us to just over 300 scholars. Aside from that, our current model only covers their school fees, but the girls require funds for sanitary items, school supplies, and other necessities that we are unable to meet.

How are you solving it? Over the past few years we're building awareness on digital platforms and knocking doors in unconventional spaces towards getting more donors to join us. This year as we celebrate 25 years we're actually holding an anniversary gala in the organization's headquarters in Boston? Wanna join us? reserve a ticket here https://growththroughlearning.org/gtl-celebrates25years/ OR make a donation today on our website.

Tell us something no-one else knows about you or your organisation?  We're a very lean team, people assume that since we support more than 300 girls a year that we may be a medium sized organization.

What’s your spirit animal? An elephant - I'm constantly eating like them, affectionate and I rarely forget.

Where can we find out more about you and Growth Through Learning?

Good user experiences we've seen on our digital travels

As part of their digital presence, we're impressed with the Unicef web page - and one part of it in particular  - it's something that's often ignored on homepages (still the entry point for enough users to warrant elements of the 'shop window' approach) in favour of splashy carousels, videos, animations and pronouncements.

It's all about need - and how the people coming to a website can quickly and efficiently be directed to the right place.

Cake a bow then 'cef - your needs-based dropdown is a damn-good approach to getting users to their destination sharpish. It's simple and effective. It's also got a nice turn of phrase that sums up their mission, values and a strong CTA in one go;

  • 'For every child...' at the beginning of the dropdown menu

  • Each dropdown element is useful, easy to understand and direct

  • '...An eduation'

  • ...a new idea'

  • '...help'

These links take users direcly to relevant contextual content, and don't disrupt the information flow by keeping them within context on the page. Good work.
