Second-hand clobber for your commute

Don'tcha just love commuting? With all that space, timeliness and Red Bus Rover cheap fares (have you fallen into the 80s? -ed) Shelter has teamed up with The Purpose's favourite franchise, Network Rail, to promote the circular economy and give a boost to Shelter shops as well.
If you're in the vicinity of that London over October, you can combine two of your favourite pastimes; being late travelling and fashion, to nab some pre-loved threads and do some good for a very worthy cause to boot. Hold my 10 am standup while I check out some grandad-collared workwear.

Interesting impact-driven people
Jess Cotton, Outlandish

Tell us bit about yourself and what you do I work on Business Development and as a Digital Producer at Outlandish. This year I've had the pleasure of working with:
Greenpeace - on a Minister engagement tool to help save our oceans
Labour Unions - a tool built to help people vote from home
UKERC - an interactive climate engagement data-visualisation tool
What organisation do you work for? Outlandish is a values-driven tech co-op that builds websites, campaigns and data tools. We enable organisations to scale and deepen their impact. We do this through technology, design, organisational development, cooperation and network building.
What’s your current biggest issue? We are currently working to address the climate emergency (although this is not our singular focus it’s a particular area I am passionate about). Over 570 councils have declared a Climate Emergency in the UK. We are thinking about how we might give access to insights and help build a road to net zero for individuals, residents and businesses on a local level, at a National scale.
How are you solving it? Outlandish have designed and developed a Carbon Calculator, currently used by Islington Council as a tool for residents and businesses to identify their current carbon footprint and make user-relevant pledges to reduce it. We would like to expand the tool’s application, develop using our continued learnings, extend our reach and help impact carbon emissions across the UK. If so we’d love to hear from you, please contact us at [email protected]
Tell us something no-one else knows about you or your organisation? There is only one (unwritten but welcomed) rule “is this good enough for now and safe enough to try?’
What’s your spirit animal and why? A wolf & a platypus (depends how I'm feeling on any given day). I’ve always had an affinity with wolves since I was a kid, I can’t explain why. Then when I went to Australia I had a similar experience when I saw a platypus. I think it’s a severe case of epistemology.
Thanks, Jess. (quickly Googles Epistemology) If you or your organisation would like to be featured in The Purpose, drop us a line at helloATpurposyDOTcom or give us a follow on Twitter and slide into our DM's
How to keep bias out of AI
AI algorithms make important decisions about you all the time -- like how much you should pay for car insurance or whether or not you get that job interview. But what happens when these machines are built with human bias coded into their systems? Technologist Kriti Sharma explores how the lack of diversity in tech is creeping into our AI, offering three ways we can start making more ethical algorithms.
