World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 - Creating hope Through Action

Every 45 seconds someone takes their life; an estimated 703,000 people a year around the world. For each suicide approximately 135 people suffer intense grief or are otherwise affected, resulting in 108 million people, annually, who are profoundly impacted by suicidal behaviours. For every suicide, 25 people make a suicide attempt and many more have serious thoughts of suicide.

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). The 10th of September each year focuses attention on the issue, reduces stigma and raises awareness among organizations, government, and the public, giving a singular message that suicide can be prevented.

Samaritans’ strategy: Tackling suicide together

Samaritans’ purpose, to be there for people who are struggling to cope and in times of crisis, is as vital as ever.

We need to keep adapting and innovating, to provide a safe space for all who will need us in the coming decades. To achieve our vision that fewer people die by suicide, we also need to do more to broaden our impact in society, working with others to make a change that saves lives.

To develop our strategy, we worked closely with people who have contacted Samaritans, been affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts, and those who volunteer and work with us or support us. With their help, we identified our main priorities for the next five years:

• Access

• Reach

• Impact

• Capacity

• Sustainability

Summary of role: 

As part of launching our new strategy, we have a brand new role for a Head of Data to join Samaritans. This role will provide hands-on leadership of data and insight across the organisation, with a particular focus on transforming the data capabilities and technologies to enable data-informed decision-making and improved outcomes and impact. We want to develop a strategic data team, enabled by an integrated data platform and you will help us to do that.
